Decatur family displaced by house fire on Green Street

DECATUR — The local American Red Cross is assisting a family after their home caught fire Saturday morning.

Decatur Fire Department crews responded to a fire at 939 W. Green around 3:30 a.m. Saturday, the department said.

“The first arriving engine company observed heavy fire to the rear of the structure and deployed a hand line to begin extinguishment,” Battalion Chief Toby Jackson said in a statement. “The second engine company deployed another hand line, entered the structure and completed the extinguishment from the inside. The fire was quickly extinguished.”

Additional companies provided assistance with water supply and searches. Downed power lines caused a delay in saving the remains of the house. Ameren crews turned off the power and shut off the gas line.

According to the battalion chief, the passengers were safely secured.

“One passenger suffered minor burns to her hands and arms and was treated at the scene by the AMR team,” Jackson said. “The family will be displaced and the Red Cross was on site helping with preparations.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation but is not considered suspicious.
