DENVER (KDVR) – Fire crews responded to two fires reportedly caused by humans at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge on Thursday.

According to Rocky Mountain Arsenal, the South Adams Fire Department, Adams County Fire Rescue and Brighton Fire Rescue responded to the brush fires. As a result, the shelter was closed and visitors were asked to leave the park.

Fortunately, crews were able to get the fires under control within a few hours. However, Rocky Mountain Arsenal said the fires were human-caused and an investigation is ongoing. The animal shelter did not say whether any suspects had been arrested.

The wildlife refuge asks anyone with information about the fires to call the Refuge Law Enforcement hotline at 303-289-0930. The hotline is monitored even when the visitor center is closed.

With the Fourth of July holiday approaching, the animal shelter said firefighters will have an increased presence over the next two weeks.

As many Americans prepare to light fireworks to celebrate the upcoming holiday, several fire departments are issuing a warning after several grass fires were reported across the city.

South Metro Fire is urging the public to “exercise caution when it comes to fireworks and prioritize the well-being of yourself and your community. By refraining from using illegal fireworks, you can help prevent accidents and minimize the risk of wildfires during this hot, dry period.”

To report the use of illegal fireworks, call your local law enforcement non-emergency number. Call 911 if you are injured or a fire is threatening life or property.
