The death toll from the fire in Hawaii has risen to 102

HONOLULU (AP) — The death toll from the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century has risen to 102, Hawaii officials said Monday.

Claudette Heermance, 68, died March 28 in a Honolulu hospice from injuries suffered in a fire that devastated the historic town of Lahaina on the Hawaiian island of Maui last year.

The Maui Police Department reported the man’s death, citing information from the Honolulu coroner’s office.

According to Dr. Masahiko Kobayashi, Honolulu’s medical examiner, Heermance suffered burns to 20% of her body surface and her case was complicated by multiple other conditions.

She was initially taken to a Maui hospital the day of the fire, but was flown to Oahu the next day to be treated at the state’s only burn unit. She entered hospice nearly four months later.

Other causes of death included cardiovascular disease, end-stage renal disease and pressure ulcers, said another official with the medical examiner’s office, who declined to give her name.

The August 8 wildfire was already the deadliest to hit the United States in over a centuryFlames ripped through the historic town of Lahaina, burning some 3,000 buildings and forcing the displacement of 12,000 residents.

Many did not make it out in time to escape the flames. Some jumped into the ocean seeking shelter from the flames.

Officials confirmed 101st death in February.

The fire victims were aged between 7 and 97, but more than two thirds According to a list of known victims maintained by Maui police, the victims were 60 or older.
