Long Island man loses hand and fingers in fireworks explosion at plaza: Police

Suffolk County police say a Long Island man had his hand and three fingers severed when a firework exploded in his backyard Saturday night.

According to police, Barry Nelson, 66, suffered serious injuries when a firework exploded in his yard on Eastern Avenue in Brentwood around 9 p.m. As a result of the explosion, the left hand and three fingers of the right hand were severed.

Police said Nelson was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital in serious condition.
