That’s when England fans rush back into the stadium after failing to equalise against Slovenia at the Euros when Jude Bellingham scored a bicycle kick.

Fans left the arena early as the Three Lions were losing 1-0 in the last match of the Euro 2024 Round of 16 yesterday evening.

But after the Real Madrid ace made it 1-1 in the 95th minute, there was a loud roar and fans ran back into the stadium.

One England fan could be heard asking: “Did we score?” as fans, clutching beers, rushed back onto the pitch, with one chanting: “We’re back, we’re back.”

It is not known whether they were allowed to return to the stadium in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, for extra time.

It was then that England fans learned that Jude Bellingham had scored the equalizer after leaving home early.

Gareth Southgate’s side booked their place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 after a nail-biting match in which the team, who had been trailing 1-0 for most of the game, scored twice with minutes to go to seal a dramatic 2-1 win that booked them a place in the quarter-finals against Switzerland next Saturday (6 July).

The team’s initial poor performance left many fans in the UK and at the stadium in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, groaning in the stands and covering their eyes, fearing England would be dumped out of the tournament.

Some who paid hundreds to fly to the AufSchalke Arena to watch the last 16 clash were left before the end of the match – ironically missing out on some of the most thrilling minutes of England’s Euro adventure so far.

As the furious fan left the pitch, he told Sky News the team’s performance was “shit”, placing the blame squarely on the England manager, suggesting he had resigned from his role.

“Well, Southgates has gone, hasn’t he?” said the fan. “Southgates has gone on holiday and the players will get on with the next two years.”

His friend, who seemed a bit more cheerful, joked that they were leaving early “just because they didn’t want to get caught on the tram.”

This meant that unlucky supporters who were among the group of supporters who left the stadium while England were still losing did not see Jude Bellingham’s incredible overhead kick that levelled the score at 1-1 with just a few seconds remaining.

They then missed their chance as Harry Kane scored the winning goal in what will undoubtedly go down as one of the biggest shocks in Euro history.

For part of the match, England were greeted by boos from around the stadium, especially after Ivan Schranz’s first-half goal for Slovakia.

However, as the last two goals found the back of the net, the stadium erupted in cheers and boos, with England players tearing off their shirts in celebration, pouring pints into the stands and jumping up and down.

“We know we’ll do whatever it takes,” England captain Kane said after the match. “We’ve got another game like that in the quarter-finals, so let’s make it happen. This team knows how to dig deep, and that’s exactly what we did today.

Bellingham’s team-mates agreed with Kane that it would be one of the greatest goals in England history.

“Of course we could have been better, we could have played better, but in the end it’s a results business and that’s what we care about. We can enjoy it, we can enjoy being back and hopefully this moment will stay with us until the end of the tournament.”

Star of the match Bellingham said his goal was one of the biggest moments of his career so far.

“I think it took me 20 seconds to get out of the European Championship,” he told reporters. “It’s hard to deny that it was one of the most important moments of my career.”

Bellingham’s team-mates unanimously admitted that Kane was delighted and believed it would be one of the greatest goals in England’s history.

“And then Jude does what Jude does, it was an unbelievable goal and it kept our tournament alive,” Kane said. “I think it’s one of the best goals in the history of our country. What a player he is. He works so hard for the team.

“There’s been a lot of talk about him over the last few days, which shows he can do what’s most important, rise to the occasion, and that’s what we expected from everyone — rise to the occasion.”

“We know we’ll do whatever it takes. If it’s another quarter-final match like this, so be it. This team knows how to dig deep and we did that today. Of course, we could have done better, but ultimately it’s a results business.

“We will be happy to be back and hope this momentum continues throughout the rest of the tournament.”
