Following a Maui Wildfires Relief workshop sponsored by three West Maui Rotary clubs on February 24, 2024, the ArtCentered initiative was among 80 projects applying for funding.

ArtCentered, a program designed to provide arts-based services to keiki and families affected by wildfires, received a $50,000 grant from the Rotary District 5000 Maui Wildfires Relief Fund, thanks to an application submitted by the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset.

The primary goal of ArtCentered is to provide consistent and compassionate art therapy services to fire victims and the community at large.

The positive impact of art on mental health has been evident at their locations, including Honokowai Beach Park and Royal Lahaina Resort. Operating five days a week, ArtCentered serves 10 to 20 people on weekdays and 30 to 50 on weekends, with the goal of providing ongoing support to those in need.

Founder Paul Petersen funded ArtCentered independently, but with Rotary’s support, the program can now run for 24 weeks. Petersen expressed gratitude for Rotary’s contribution, emphasizing the importance of providing a creative outlet for the community to heal and express itself.

Looking to the future, ArtCentered plans to establish a permanent facility in Lahaina that will serve as a creative hub for the local community.

The funds provided by Rotary reflect the spirit of unity among Rotarians who have come together to help the Lahaina community on its path to recovery.

ArtCentered continues to use art as a tool for healing and growth, supporting a positive outlook for those facing challenges.
