3 dead after commuter bus hit garbage truck, caught fire on Route 1 Media Bypass in Delaware County

UPPER PROVIDENCE TWP., Pennsylvania (WPVI) — Three people died in a crash between a public transit bus and a garbage truck in Upper Providence, Delaware County.

The district attorney’s office said the victims included the bus driver and two passengers.

The crash occurred just before 8 a.m. Tuesday in the southbound lanes of the Route 1 Media Bypass, near the exit for Route 252.

According to police, the bus hit the back of a garbage truck and caught fire.

Police said the bus driver was trapped in the wreckage and died at the scene.

Drivers passing the bus managed to pull two passengers out through the back doors, but police say the passengers were already dead by the time paramedics arrived.

The garbage truck driver was taken to hospital to receive medical treatment for minor injuries.

The accident caused serious traffic disruptions in the area.
