Race Across the World’s Alfie and Owen Reveal Rival Friendships After Filming Ends

Race Across the World’s Alfie and Owen have revealed that all the contestants remained friends after filming wrapped.

Six months after filming wrapped, the Race Across the World stars reunited for a reunion episode, including Sharon and Brydie, who were eliminated early on in the race. The best friends joined siblings Betty and James, mother and daughter Eugenie and Isabel, and retired couple Stephen and Viv.

But Alfie and Owen – who are busy spending their £20,000 prize money – have revealed how all the contestants have stayed in touch in their personal lives as they have bonded over their shared experiences. They have become particularly close to their rivals Betty and James, who are a similar age to them both.

While they talk to everyone, it was Betty and James that they met up with after filming wrapped.

Owen told Yahoo: “So we were in a group chat with everyone together. And me and Alfie keep in touch with James and Betty quite well, obviously because of the similar age. So we talk to everyone.

“Betty and James and I have met a few times, but yeah, we all get along really well. We were all in this together, even though we were racing in separate races. But we can just respect what we’ve been through. And yeah, we just get along really well.”

Alfie predicted that Betty and James would have been fierce rivals in the race if they hadn’t been so unlucky. The siblings had lost their passports twice, had their money stolen, gone the wrong way and suffered many other disasters. However, their luck didn’t run out as James and Betty finished third, just a pound ahead.

Alfie explained: “To be honest, I think Betty and James would have been up there if they had just had a bit more luck. Even in the final, they missed a few connections that could have allowed them to make up a few hours.

“They just weren’t lucky for the entire eight weeks. And I think sometimes that’s just part of the race. We were lucky to have a lot of connections. So it’s hard to analyze someone’s game plan beyond luck, honestly.”

Some say Alfie and Owen tested their friendship when they set off in the Race Across the World, but their bond was never strained.

Owen said: “We thought at some point in the Race Across the World there would be a big argument or a falling out, but it didn’t happen. It was a bit of a surprise. We said if we were going to have an argument, we were going to have a big argument. It didn’t happen, so it’s all good. We were very open with each other, we understood what each of us wanted from the race and we were very clear about that.”

Alfie also said: “We ran the race exactly as we wanted, gained an amazing set of experiences and didn’t lose our friendship. We couldn’t have asked for much more from it.”
