The Knoxville Fire Department is urging residents not to set off fireworks due to hot, dry weather expected over the next few days.

“This means the risk of fires caused by fireworks remains high and we ask the public to refrain from using fireworks,” KFD Deputy Chief Mark Wilbanks said in a news release.

According to dought.gov, Knox County is unusually dry.

Fireworks caused several fires over the Fourth of July holiday, including a house and a car fire, and emergency crews responded to several more calls than during the 2023 holiday.

Fireworks-Caught Fires in Knoxville

  • KFD was dispatched to a house fire at 1946 Ohio Ave. where a major fire had broken out in the roof of a vacant home. The fire was extinguished within 10 minutes, and the home sustained moderate damage. Firefighters said the cause was fireworks.
  • Near Gloria Garner Street and New York Avenue, a car burst into flames as police and firefighters arrived. A fire department spokesman said in a news release that juveniles were setting off fireworks from the car, which caught fire. All five suffered burns and were treated at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
  • In Lonsdale, a firefighter was injured when a firework was fired into the cab of a fire engine. The firefighter suffered possible hearing damage and minor damage to equipment.
