One person was killed and eight others were seriously injured in a mass shooting late on Independence Day in Philadelphia, police said.

The motive for the shooting was still under investigation Friday, a Philadelphia Police Department spokesman said. At least three of the victims were teenagers, including one as young as 14.

The shooting occurred near the Kingsessing district, about six miles southwest of the city centre.

Police said that around 11:30 p.m. Thursday, an officer found one of the victims with a gunshot wound in the middle of the street.

“Our officers were in the area on routine patrol and noticed someone lying on the ground,” Philadelphia Police Inspector Kpana Massaquoi said, according to CBS Philadelphia. “It’s very disturbing, especially when you have officers in the area trying to prevent something like this from happening and it happened.”

The third juvenile, a 14-year-old boy shot in the right thigh, was taken to the hospital by private car and then transported to a local children’s hospital, police said.
