A construction worker died on Friday after falling from the fourth floor of a building under construction in the residential area of ​​Bhasundhara in the national capital Vatara.

The deceased has been identified as 30-year-old Mohammad Faruk, a resident of Sholojan village, located in Kalmakanda police station in Netrakona.

Vatara Police Station Sub-Inspector Shahriar Jalal told New Age that the incident took place around 11am in the morning in a building under construction.

Omar Faruk, cousin of the deceased, said that Mohammed Faruk was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

SI Shahriar also informed that an investigation into the matter is already underway.

DMCH in-charge Md Bachchu Mia said the body has been kept at the DMCH morgue for post-mortem.

Earlier on Thursday morning, a worker died after falling from the fourth floor of a building under construction in the capital’s Azimpur district.

The deceased, Khairunessa, 50, is a widow and is survived by three daughters. She hailed from Kalkini upazila in Madaripur.

In its 2020 report, the Safety and Rights Society noted that the transport sector had the highest number of workplace deaths, with 168, followed by construction (118), services (86), manufacturing (45) and agriculture (16).

According to the report, of the deaths in the construction sector, 112 deaths occurred during building construction, five during bridge construction and one during road construction.

The most common causes of deaths at work are electric shock, falls from height, death by crushing or being struck by objects, fire, collapse of the earth, collapse of a building, roof or wall, and explosion.

Occupational health and safety experts believe that around 90 percent of workplace accidents could be avoided if precautions were followed.

In 2020, the highest number of workplace deaths (48) was recorded in Dhaka, followed by 41 deaths in Chattogram.
