A fire broke out in two houses in San Rafael on Thursday evening.

(KRON) — Two homes located on a steep hillside caught fire on the evening of July 4, the San Rafael Fire Department said.

The San Rafael Police Department responded to a residential fire at 60 and 64 Martens St. at 11 p.m. Police first assisted in the safe evacuation of a resident at 60 Martens St. before firefighters arrived.

Seven fire trucks responded to two house fires. The first truck to arrive found the “upper portions” of both homes burning. Crews also reported that the garages and patio structures of the homes were fully engulfed in flames upon arrival, SRFD said.

Firefighters said the fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes. It took several hours to completely extinguish the blaze, and SRFD said fire crews remained on scene throughout the night. There were no reported injuries to firefighters or residents.

The fire also damaged a utility pole on Martens. SRFD said Martens BI will be closed between Ivy Lane and Oak Ave until further notice.

Firefighters began investigating at 7 a.m. Friday. No damage to homes was assessed.
